Milan van Wingerden

Microsoft Solution Consultant. Purview, Entra, and Defender specialist. Gamifier of sensitivity labels.

I've spent the past five years working as a consultant in the endpoint and security space, and I currently work as a Microsoft Solution Consultant at CWSI, focused on data security. My job is to help organizations protect their most valuable asset — their data — across an environment that keeps getting harder to draw a clean edge around: workstations, servers, identities, SaaS apps, and now AI agents all need to be accounted for in the same policy.

I hold five Microsoft certifications: MD-102 (Endpoint Administrator), AZ-500 (Azure Security Engineer), MS-102 (Microsoft 365 Administrator), SC-300 (Identity and Access Administrator), and SC-401 (Information Security Administrator). Between them they cover the three areas I care about most and write about here: Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Entra, and Microsoft Defender.

How I think about the work

I like out-of-the-box approaches to problems that usually get solved with a slide deck and a policy document. The clearest example is LabelNinja, a quiz game I built to teach Purview sensitivity label taxonomy — Public, Internal, Confidential, Highly Confidential — as something people actually play and remember, instead of a table they skim once during onboarding and never open again. Gamifying data classification training turned out to work a lot better than another slide with four colored boxes on it.

I also genuinely enjoy presenting and public speaking — breaking down a security concept in front of a room (or a camera) is a different skill from writing it down, and I like practicing both. If you're organizing a meetup, user group, or conference session on Purview, Entra, or Defender, I'm always happy to talk.

The Microsoft MVP goal

This site — the Security section in particular — is part of a deliberate, public effort toward Microsoft MVP status in the Security category. LabelNinja is my main community contribution so far; the write-ups on Purview, Entra, and Defender updates are the other half: sharing what I learn as I learn it, not just after it's fully polished.
